ZERO 9

The ZERO 9 is a high-quality urban model. Its build quality is excellent, offering exceptional combination of power, range, safety, comfort and compactness that can’t be matched by many competing city scooters. This model is an example of how a small powerful city scooter should look like. Its biggest advantage over all other competitors comes, in particular, with the re-designed chassis, featuring two spring shock absorbers on the rear axle and one spring on the front axle, as well as two mechanical brakes. In addition to very comfortable chassis, given its weight and dimensions, it features a 600 W motor capable of handling speeds of up to 47 km/h and a battery providing range of up to 45 km. Unlike its ZERO 8 sibling, the “Nine” also comes with a front disc brake. All parameters and comfort are above standard with both models (ZERO 8 and 9), except for weight that is relatively big, namely 18 kg.

Comfort

Among small practical city scooters, it is very difficult to find a model that would provide more comfort than the ZERO 9. It features 9-inch air-filled wheels enhancing riding comfort and is also equipped with double spring shock absorbers at the rear and one at the front! In this price and size category, where it is common to have no chassis suspension at all (see Xiaomi or Ninebot MAX scooters that are hard as boards, which is kind of reprehensible), the ZERO 9 model is a beacon of hope for a comfortable ride around the city. The comfort and good feeling are enhanced further by the fact that the scooter features two mechanical brakes. The 9-inch wheels are more comfortable than 8-inch wheels that are typically used in this category. Naturally, all this comfort, suspension, large battery and brakes must weigh something, which is why riders have to tolerate greater weight reaching 18 kg.

Power and range

The ZERO 9 is equipped with a single 600 W motor installed at the rear. The motor delivers its power without any unnecessary jerking and in a pleasant way, being sufficient for reaching the top speed of up to 47 km/h, which is more than enough for using a scooter in a city. 600 W is not afraid of mild inclines, particularly when the scooter does not carry a rider too heavy. The power is controlled by a controller capable of handling up to 25 A, which means that it has been designed with reasonable spare capacity contributing to is long serviceable life. The range is above-standard thanks to 624 Wh battery (13 Ah and 48 V), reaching about 45 km. Those are excellent specs in this price category, which are further improved by the scooter’s excellent chassis and safety features in the form of two mechanical brakes.

Safety

Small city scooters always require some kind of a compromise. The ZERO 9 model tries to change that. The ZERO 9 scooter makes no compromises when it comes to performance, range and, in particular, safety – it has two mechanical brakes, which is an above-standard feature in this category. These are not electromagnetic brakes but rather standard mechanical brakes. The rear brake is a drum brake and the front brake is a disc brake, both being controlled by brake levers on the handlebars. The scooter brakes significantly better than other models in this category, which rely on electromagnetic brakes (such as Booster models made by E-Twow, Xiaomi scooters and the like) and also better than models equipped with a single brake (Booster GT 2020, ZERO 8 and others). Further contributing to comfort are its very comfortable chassis and the lights integrated into the scooter’s body, shining at the front, rear and even on the sides, which again is a premium feature making this scooter very well visible at night. The engine placement at the rear also contributes to safety as there is no danger of a serious engine failure causing the rider to fall.

Design

The black-red combination is a unique signature of all ZERO models and looks fantastic on the 9 model. As one of few scooters, the 9 has its own design language, making it stand out among all other scooters in this category that look similar as one oak leaf to another. The scooter gives a quality, even luxurious impression and looks more expensive than actually is. The rear shock absorbers and the front spring in red finish highlight the fact that this is a comfortable model that is not afraid of our bumpy roads and pavements. The cabling is relatively well hidden inside the scooter’s body, which in turn looks clean and elegant. The design, similar to the entire ZERO brand, is primarily based on functionality that is thought through in every detail and looks elegant. The sides of the scooter are backlit and the entire steering column is illuminated, improving safety and underlining scooter’s modern look. All lights are integrated into the scooter body, maintaining purity of lines and design.

Use and practicality

With its weight of 18 kg, it is not the lightest powerful electric city scooter, as this category continues to be ruled by E-Twow. However, it is a reasonable alternative with a slightly more comfortable chassis, mechanical front and rear brakes, a favourable price (given its specs) and, in particular, with greater emphasis on safety. The scooter is a little more robust, which is naturally reflected in its weight. However, it counterbalances it with greater comfort, overall toughness and stronger, wider and more comfortable handlebars that are easily foldable and, at the same time, strong. The 9-inch wheels are an excellent choice for bad terrain, contributing to the riding comfort. The excellent foldability allows taking the scooter wherever you go. You can leave it under a chair in a café or in a restaurant where it won’t be obstructing anybody. The scooter’s great advantage is its high reliability contributing to the good feeling of ZERO 9 always taking you comfortably where you need to go. The integrated lights, including side lights and illuminated steering column, predestine this model for night city rides and the two mechanical brakes always stop the scooter as needed. This is a sensible solution for those who are willing to accept more weight in exchange for better safety and comfort.

The ZERO 9 is a good choice for an urban environment, if you are looking for a powerful and safe scooter for a reasonable price. Its biggest competitors are the models made by E-Twow, which rule the category of ultra-light scooters and weigh about 6 kg less while offering similar specs on paper. However, the specs on paper do not tell the whole story and when it comes to safety, the ZERO 9 has a definite advantage. The question thus remains whether you prefer the lowest possible weight or a little more comfortable ride and, in particular, better safety in the form of two mechanical brakes. The ZERO 9 is one of the hot candidates to become the king of medium-class safe city scooters.
