Can’t wait to wake up your electric scooter from winter hibernation and take it for the first ride? Before you do that, you need to take one important step – a complete functionality check.

Winter is the most demanding period for all electric scooters, regardless of whether you have it hidden under your bed or use it for riding in cold weather. Therefore, to avoid any unpleasant surprise after a few kilometers of the new season, you should check the following most basic components of your scooter.

Start with the battery

It is the most important and most difficult component to repair. The battery is at the heart of each electric scooter and it is the battery that suffers most during the winter. If you use your electric scooter actively in winter, you surely know that low temperatures dramatically reduce its capacity. However, it also suffers when you store it away ahead of winter almost fully discharged and leave it like that until spring, without occasionally recharging it. Yet, improper charging is not the only problem that may appear during winter when it comes to your battery.

For instance, before you winterize your electric scooter, you might have ridden it on a wet road and water could have penetrated inside. If so, you are very close to battery leakage or oxidation. Moisture could have also formed inside by condensation when riding in cold winter conditions with water condensing as a result of sudden changes in temperature.

Those are oxidized or leaked batteries that are among the most frequent types of repair work in Max Blinker’s service shop. Fortunately, our experienced technicians are able to handle this problem. Still, it is better to avoid it altogether. Before you venture out on your first spring ride, make the effort to remove the battery cover and check the battery condition. Also, do not forget the rules of proper charging.

Check the tires

Often underestimated, yet one of the most important parts of an electric scooter. After all, the tires are the only surface that connects you to the road below, which is why they should always be kept in top condition.

Regardless of whether you have inflatable or solid wheels. In both cases, check them for any visible damage to the tire casing and whether they have sufficient tread depth. With inflatable tires, make sure that they are inflated to correct pressure. Over the winter, even a smallest puncture causes the entire tire to gradually fully deflate.

You can either have a puncture repaired by service technicians or you may repair it yourself. As for tips on what to do when you wish to repair a puncture on your electric scooter, see our instructional video.

Don’t forget brakes

You have already checked the tires. But let’s stay with the wheels for a while. The next step is to check the efficiency of your brakes. Those are mainly disc brakes that need more care as they are directly exposed to external conditions. Getting inside drum or electromagnetic brakes is not that easy. Therefore, you should seek professional help in such case.

But let’s get back to disc brakes. Before the first spring ride, check the components such as the disc, brake pads or cables for any damage and make sure they are not worn out. If you have hydraulic brakes, check for any brake fluid leaks.

In addition to visual inspection, the basic steps include a braking efficiency test. Test whether both brakes work with same braking effect and whether they brake sufficiently. If not, then if you have brake cables it is necessary to adjust the cable length or re-check all brake components.

Reduced efficiency with hydraulic brakes may indicate presence of air in the braking system. Again, you can either have the brake fluid replacement and bleeding performed at an electric scooter service shop or you can solve this problem at home, if you wish. See our instructional video on how to bleed hydraulic brakes on an electric scooter.

Tighten all screws

You should pay extra attention to all connections and moving parts of your scooter not only before the first spring trip but at least once a month. Road bumps and holes, as well as normal operation, cause the gradual loosening of screws and seals. If this is not addressed, you automatically increase the risk of malfunction or, in the worst case, injury.

Electric scooters usually feature a lot of screws and nuts and it is not worth to miss a single one of them. You should pay particular attention to tightening the scooter folding system, handlebars and suspension arms. But do not forget other parts, such as attachment of brakes, mudguards, display and other components. Tighten all nuts and screws carefully, otherwise you might damage the thread.
